Sir Bob Charles 12-week Practice Plan

Smarter practice.
Better results.

1

Long Game Focus

Lay the groundwork. Create a clear picture of your swing, your tendencies, and what you need to work on.

Week 1 – Baseline Assessment + Lesson

Get straight to work with a structured 90-ball range session to establish your starting point. This is your foundation week, designed to give you clarity, data, and direction.

90-Ball Example Plan:

15 balls to the 3 x short targets (45 balls total) – focussing on alignment, distance control and mechanics
15-20 balls: to the mid-range flag over the bunker
15 drivers
15 balls: player’s choice

Additions:

Film your swing from two angles regularly.
Book your TPI Screen to identify and understand how your body connects to the way you swing the golf club.
Book a lesson with one of our coaches to personalise the 12-week plan to your game and goals.

Week 2 – Range Session: Distances & Dispersion

Use a 90-ball basket to target 3 distances. Focussing on the mid to long range clubs.

Track where your shots are missing (left/right/short/long).

Understanding your tendencies when you miss can be very beneficial to helping you shoot lower scores as it will help you manage your shots better during play.

Buy a 90-ball basket

Week 3 – Club Fitting + Check In

Book a club fitting with one of our experts to make sure your gear is actually working for you.

We often find clubs in players’ bags that don’t suit their swing or gaps that are costing them shots without them even knowing.

Lock in your next lesson, too. It’s time to check in: Have you improved? Stalled? Overdone the work-ons from Week 1? Let’s find out.

Week 4 – Long Game Practice

You’ve built the foundation, now it’s time to bring some discipline to the range. Apply your full pre-shot routine to at least 40% of your shots. No range rabbits here (racking in a ball and hitting on repeat). Select a specific target, pick a specific shot, and apply full routine.

Additions:

Try the Driver Accuracy Test (hit 20 drives on the range and record how many finish within 25 metres).
Film your swing during every practice session to monitor your progress.

Short Game and Scoring Skills

Time to shift gears. This month is all about the scoring zone – pitching, chipping, and putting. Small swings, big gains, lower scores.

Week 5 – Long Game + Short Game Split

Split your time: half on the range, half in the pitching area.

Start with repetition and accuracy, then layer in variation – different lies, flight control, and club choices.

On the putting green, drill your 3–10 footers with purpose.

And if you haven’t already, grab a WellStroke Putting Mat to groove your stroke at home. Every rep counts.

Week 6 – Two Short Game Sessions

Two focused sessions on pitching, chipping, bunkers, and putting.

Try the Bunker Test and train specific putting distances using the WellStroke Putting Mat as an aid (5ft, 15ft and 30ft are good distances to train from).

Week 7 – Blended Practice: Long + Short Game

This week is about connection.

Focus on how your pitching motion blends into your full swing – what you’re working on in your full swing is often the same as your pitching, so increasing your pitching reps can work wonders.

On the putting green, build confidence on breaking putts while continuing to fine-tune your stroke and speed control.

Finish with playing the Sir Bob Charles Golf Centre 18-hole Putting Course (Adults $5/Children free) – the ultimate test of touch.

Week 8 – Short Game Challenge

Use your WellStroke Putting Mat for 5–10 minute daily practice at home.

Focus on 30–50 metre pitch shots and basic chipping around the pitching green.

Add pressure games to simulate real play.

Try the '21 Challenge':

Drop 9 balls around the short game area – 9 different shots
The goal is to get the ball 'up and down' in as few shots as possible
21 shots is the goal
Nail it? Make the shots harder or stretch the distances

Course Focus and Scoring Strategy

Time to apply what you’ve worked on, manage your game better, and perform on the course.

Week 9 – On Course Coaching

Play 3-5 holes with one of our coaching professionals.

Learn to manage misses, pick smart targets, and commit fully to each shot. Taking what you have been working on in practice and applying it on course is difficult to do alone, but with the help of a coach, the transition can be seamless.

Mix in some pitching and bunker work post-round to reinforce the session.

Week 10 – On-Course + Target Practice

Time to measure your progress.

Repeat your core tests:

Driver Accuracy
Bunker Test
18-hole Putting Course

Then build focused routines for tee shots, approach play, and putting – so when it matters, you're not guessing, you're ready.

Week 11 – Pressure & Routine Training

Every shot counts.

This week strengthen your pre-shot routine, visualisation and mental awareness. Build mental cues to help you accept outcomes and rest after a poor shot.

Create a RESET button – it could be a breath, a word, a gesture – to help you bounce back when you get into a rut, something to bring you back into the moment.

And as always, our coaches are here to help you if you need support.

Week 12 – Full On-Course Session

It's time to hit the course. Get out and play as many holes as you can – the more holes you play the more momentum and consistency you have. You might even find your flow state during this process.

Review scores, note dispersion patterns, and assess overall improvement.
